Subject Overview:

At Tibshelf Community School, our Drama curriculum at Key Stage 3 offers students a dynamic and creative introduction to the world of performance. Through interactive lessons, students explore essential drama skills such as acting, improvisation, role play, and stagecraft. Our curriculum encourages students to build confidence, teamwork, and communication skills, while also developing their creativity and critical thinking. Students will engage in exciting activities ranging from scripted performances to devising their own pieces, offering a fun and inclusive space for all, regardless of experience level.

For those who wish to deepen their experience, our Year 9 Drama option is designed to provide a more focused exploration of dramatic techniques and performance styles. Students will have the opportunity to explore different genres of theatre, as well as develop their understanding of key theatrical elements such as character development, set design, and the use of space.

Those opting for Drama start the WJEC GCSE Drama course in Y10 and it takes students on a deeper journey into the art of performance, theatre production, and analysis. Through a blend of practical work and written exploration, students study key texts, learn to interpret scripts, and develop their own original performances. The course covers acting, directing, technical theatre, and live performance evaluations, allowing students to both hone their craft and build a theoretical understanding of drama and theatre. Students will also have the chance to showcase their work in front of live audiences, gaining invaluable experience in the world of theatre.

Assessment Information – KS3

Students are assessed each lesson on how they work with others during the rehearsal stage, how they create ideas and how much confidence they have in the delivery of their ideas. At the end of every half-term in each topic they will produce a final project to create, collaborate and perform with confidence. Staff will provide a summative assessment on these areas:

• Creativity: How students use the techniques and show ability to create Drama
• Collaboration: How students communicate with others in a group and develop their ideas.
• Confidence: How students feel about performing in front of others, sharing their work with precision and detail.

Students are encouraged to attend whole school productions to further enhance their skills, knowledge and confidence to maximise their progress in Performing Arts.

Assessment Information – KS4

Students are assessed in the following three components:

• Component 1: Understanding Drama-Written exam on set text and live theatre evaluation.
• Component 2: Devising Drama-Creating their own work from a stimulus
• Component 3: Texts in practice-Performing a script

The assessments for these range from written devise, log coursework and a written exam based on a set text and live theatre performance; to practically assessed performances that students create, direct and perform in response to a stimulus.
